#000000;\">Here\u2019s the rough but strangely consistent timeline for most web-delivered \u201c1 hour overview demos\u201d:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">[Starting time for each element on the left side]:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">00:00:\u00a0 Fumbling with Zoom\/WebEx\/GoToMeeting\/Teams \u2013<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cLooks like John\/Sue\/Page\/whoever is just joining now\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cCan you see my screen?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cLooks like you\u2019re muted\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWe\u2019re hearing a really bad echo\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(This consumption of time is delightfully known as the \u201cWebEx Tax\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">00:04:\u00a0 Introductions, but generally one-sided \u2013<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Introductions and brief personal history of each of the vendor participants, but limited information requested or offered regarding customer participants before diving in\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">00:06:\u00a0 Corporate overview presentation (gag\u2026), often including<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mission statement<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Products and services (high level \u2013 see next section at 00.18 for the gory details)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Product history and milestones<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Founders and origins story<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Team<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Revenue history and financials<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Office locations<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Obligatory logos slide(s) (with logos that often have nothing to do with <em>this<\/em> customer\u2019s market)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Customer testimonials (actually the <em>most<\/em> useful part of corporate overview presentations, but often ignored by the vendor&#8230; Why?)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">00:18:\u00a0 Product overview presentation (yawn), including<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Obligatory architecture slide(s), with equally obligatory rectangles and cylinders representing software and database components (how novel\u2026)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Equally obligatory product-centric slide (showing company\u2019s product in the center of a circle of other things (e.g., users, other applications, process steps, you name it \u2013 so novel, once again!)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Key \u201cdifferentiators\u201d, presented without context to the customer\u2019s needs or specific situation (and largely forgotten by the customer, since they haven\u2019t yet seen a solution that makes remembering anything relevant)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Case studies, if any, that are typically skipped over \u201cbecause we\u2019re short on time\u2026\u201d (too bad \u2013 real case studies would be the most interesting section)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">00:26:\u00a0 \u201cActual\u201d demo, including<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Slide that says, \u201cDemo\u201d (which lets the audience know that everything from this point forward is \u201cfake\u201d\u2026)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Opening statement that \u201cWe planned on 45 minutes for the demo, but we only have 30 minutes remaining, so we\u2019ll have to go really fast\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Followed immediately by, \u201cBut we\u2019d like this be interactive, so please stop me if you have any questions\u2026\u201d (while the presenter is actually thinking, \u201cBut please don\u2019t stop me because I\u2019ve got <em>so<\/em> much to cover and you\u2019ll interrupt my flow\u2026!\u201d)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Brief introduction of the plan for a \u201cstory\u201d and 5 fictional characters whose \u201cday in the life\u201d will be followed in the demo<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Followed by a firehose-like delivery with the presenter speaking non-stop for 4, 6, or 8 minutes or longer (I just saw an overview demo where the presenter went on for 40 minutes non-stop!) <\/span>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Interspersed with the obligatory, \u201cAny questions so far?\u201d <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Customer response? \u201cNope, we\u2019re good\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Or \u201cDoes that make sense?\u201d <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Customer response? \u201cUm, yes\u2026\u201d (What else <em>could<\/em> the customer say to that?)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Overview of navigation elements\u2026<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Introduction and definitions of vendor jargon, acronyms and product names (e.g., \u201cWhat we call a _____&#8230;\u201d)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Repeated comment that everything is configurable<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Repeated comment that everything can drill-down to the underlying data<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Details on how to set up the application, (even though this task is typically done only once, when first implemented, and often by the vendor\u2019s implementation team)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A walk-through of the workflow (a run-through, in fact, since time is really getting short) <\/span>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Exploration of as many \u201cif\u201d, \u201cor\u201d, and \u201calso\u201d options as possible<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Frequent references to, \u201cRemember when I\u2026\u201d (that aren\u2019t remembered by the audience)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Zippy-Mouse-Syndrome mouse movements exacerbated by a tiny mouse cursor that can barely be seen with the naked eye<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Made even worse through the lack of use of annotation tools<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Made yet worse by the vendor presenting from a high-resolution monitor to audience members laptops (\u201cI can\u2019t read the text\u2026\u201d)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The occasional \u201cpiling on\u201d of a feature description by the salesperson, immediately after a perfectly adequate explanation by the presenter\u2026<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pre-answering questions that you\u2019ve heard frequently (but weren\u2019t asked)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Being driven \u201cinto the weeds\u201d by a random question from a low-level customer team member<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cutting off customer questions before the customer finishes (because you\u2019ve heard the question so many times before\u2026)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Not confirming that you actually <em>answered<\/em> the customer\u2019s question, before moving on\u2026<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A rapid verbal description of the canned and custom reporting and dashboard capabilities: <\/span>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Often including the claim that \u201cwe have over 600 canned reports\/dashboards\u2026\u201d of which a typical user might only consume a few\u2026!<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Discussion of broad report and dashboard editing and creation capabilities<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Repeated comment that everything can drill-down to the underlying data<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Showing data that is obviously fake and\/or lacks problems to solve, opportunities to exploit, or exceptions to investigate<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Comment that \u201cwe didn\u2019t have enough time to show you everything\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">No summaries whatsoever \u2013 just a firehose furiously flinging features, functions, and facts<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">No analogies or metaphors to improve memory retention for the audience<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">No stories to cement memories, either<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And, of course, absolutely no communication of value\u2026<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">00:58\u00a0\u00a0 Salesperson summary, with marketing platitude \u201cvalue proposition\u201d statements (that have little or limited bearing on the customer\u2019s specific situation)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">00:60\u00a0\u00a0 Salesperson suggests scheduling a \u201cdeep dive\u201d demo or offers a POC\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Customer reaction of, \u201cThanks \u2013 we\u2019ll get back to you\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Frightening, gruesome and remarkably common!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If the objective was to \u201cshow the customer a demo\u201d then <em>that <\/em>objective was achieved \u2013 but it is very doubtful that other tangible progress was made in the sale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Very sad; and largely a waste of time for all involved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Assessment Time \u2013 Prepare Yourself\u2026!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Play a few recordings of <em>your<\/em> organization\u2019s overview demos and see how many of the items identified above you or your team does today.\u00a0 Score 1 point for each item committed above.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">[If the recording shows that each item above was exhibited, then your score is (sadly) ~50 \u2013 the good news is you have LOTS of room for improvement!]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Now for grading \u2013 how did you do?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">0-5 Points:\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A \u2013 your demos are delightfully unusual (and you are likely a Great Demo! graduate\u2026!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">6-10 Points:\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 B \u2013 your demos could improve\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">11-15 Points:\u00a0 C \u2013 your demos could <em>really <\/em>improve\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">16-20 Points:\u00a0\u00a0 D \u2013 your demos should <em>seriously<\/em> improve\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">20+ Points:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 F \u2013 your demos qualify for membership in the \u201cSales Prevention Team\u201d!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sadly, most overview demos rate a C grade or worse.\u00a0 If you are comfortable with the results, read no further (and keep your expectations low\u2026!).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">However, if you would like to see improvement, here are some ideas.\u00a0 We promised both problem identification <em>and<\/em> solutions \u2013 so let\u2019s talk about how to address these challenges, in order\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Solutions!\u00a0 (Part 1)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fumbling with Zoom\/WebEx\/GoToMeeting\/Teams:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Start your web session 10 minutes early \u2013 and see <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/greatdemo.com\/great-demo-remote-demos-best-practices\/\">Great Demo! Remote Demos Best Practices<\/a> for 12 top tips on driving interactivity over the web.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Introductions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sadly, the customer really doesn\u2019t typically care about you, the vendor. Instead, ask three simple questions of each customer participant:<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What is your name?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What is your job title?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What is your objective for this meeting?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Corporate overview presentation:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">OK, don\u2019t. Just don\u2019t.\u00a0 The customer wouldn\u2019t have agreed to invest an hour with you if they hadn\u2019t already vetted you as a vendor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But if you <em>must<\/em> (sigh), reduce it to a single slide and limit it to 1 minute.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Product overview presentation:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Architecture slide(s): Hold in reserve\u2026<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Product-centric slide: Ditto\u2026<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Key \u201cdifferentiators\u201d: insert into your Discovery conversation, using <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/greatdemo.com\/competitive-demo-situations-biasing-towards-your-strengths\/\">biased questions<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Case studies: Yes!\u00a0 minutes for the demo, but we only have 30 minutes remaining\u2026\u201d: Don\u2019t.\u00a0 You\u2019ll be fine if you apply these ideas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWe\u2019d like this be interactive\u2026\u201d: Make it so by turning your demo into a conversation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cDay in the life story\u201d: Don\u2019t.\u00a0 Instead, <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Great-Demo-Stunning-Software-Demonstrations-ebook-dp-B001CHSSUO\/dp\/B001CHSSUO\/ref=mt_other?_encoding=UTF8&amp;me=&amp;qid=1167092168\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Do the Last Thing First<\/a>.\u00a0 Share an agenda to keep everyone aligned \u2013 returning to your agenda as you finish each \u201cchunk\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Firehose-like delivery: <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/greatdemo.com\/seven-habits-for-stunningly-successful-demos\/\">Studies show<\/a> that the most successful demos enjoy \u201cspeaker switches\u201d on an average of 76 seconds.\u00a0 If you\u2019ve been presenting uninterrupted for 3 or 4 minutes (or longer) it is time to summarize and check-in with your audience!<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cAny questions so far?\u201d: Consider, \u201cQuestions, comments, observations?\u201d as an alternative.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cDoes that make sense?\u201d: Try, \u201cHow does that resonate with you?\u201d or <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/greatdemo.com\/does-that-make-sense\/\">similar<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Navigation elements: Nope \u2013 that\u2019s for training.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/greatdemo.com\/awful-demo-phrases\/\">Vendor jargon<\/a>: Nope \u2013 ditto.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Everything is configurable: Let the customer ask\u2026!\u00a0 (That\u2019s how a conversation happens\u2026)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Drill-down\u2026: Again, let the customer ask.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/greatdemo.com\/set-up-mode\/\">Set up mode<\/a>: Ditto \u2013 this is where far too many presenters squander time on things that are done once or are only of interest to the system administrator.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Workflow walk-through: <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/greatdemo.com\/seven-habits-for-stunningly-successful-demos\/\">Reorganize your content<\/a> so that the most important items are addressed first \u2013 like a <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/greatdemo.com\/why-like-a-news-article\/\">news article<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/greatdemo.com\/two-words-to-avoid\/\">If\u201d, \u201cor\u201d, and \u201calso\u201d<\/a>: Each use of these creates a branch in your demo \u2013 consuming time and making your session, if possible (and appropriate).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">1\u00a0 \u00a0Use a <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/greatdemo.com\/vision-generation-demos\/\">Vision Generation Demo<\/a> to provide your customer with <em>just enough <\/em>demo to satisfy the desire to \u201csee your offering\u201d, while moving them gently (but firmly) into a Discovery conversation.
